Loft Studio New Build

Montrose Loft Residence

Houston, TX

Tucked away between River Oaks and the edge of Downtown Houston, this 594 sq ft studio loft reimagines small-space living with the spirit of a New York loft. Designed with an industrial edge and a touch of world-traveled eclecticism, it balances minimalism with character, creating a space that feels both expansive and intimate at the same time.

A soaring gable-like ceiling enhances the sense of openness, while neutral tones and an unconventional layout highlight the power of simplicity. Every element contributes to a vibrant, inspiring atmosphere, an ever-shifting canvas for creativity.

Designed for fluidity, the loft adapts effortlessly, whether as an artist’s retreat, a short-term sanctuary, or a workspace where ideas take shape.

With the rising demand for minimalist and affordable spaces in prime locations, this project became an opportunity to create a sanctuary, offering a sense of relief while remaining seamlessly connected to the energy of the inner city, where function and imagination intertwine.

This was built from the ground up with purpose and flexibility in mind. As a detached studio apartment above a garage, the Montose Loft was envisioned as a multi-use retreat, adaptable as an Airbnb rental, guest suite, or further art or design studio. House of Chani led the design process from start to finish, balancing creativity with function in a small footprint.

The process began with a quick hand-sketched elevation idea and space planning solution to help visualize the scale and flow of working with a small home, utilizing the space well for multipurpose use.

Selections of materials, finishes, and furnishing with intention, blending industrial touches with warmth to create a space that feels both open and grounded. Lighting became a key design feature in a space with more windows than walls. With limited room for traditional art or decor, fixtures were chosen for both function and form, acting as bold, sculptural elements in a minimal layout.
