Historical Revive / Houston,Texas

This 2,500 sq ft 1920s historical bungalow, located in the heart of Montrose, had seen a century’s worth of mismatched renovations, each decade layering over the last in an effort to follow passing trends or prepare the home for resale. The result was a patchwork of styles, finishes, and structural changes that compromised its original charm and character.

The goal of this renovation was to thoughtfully peel back those layers and restore the architectural integrity of the home. Its salvaged original elements, including wood floors, moldings, and the fireplace, were preserved, while other design choices were focused on replicating the same style to create a seamless, cohesive backdrop for its architecture. Our team balanced the modern functionality of today’s world with a more European-influenced style to play with the size and scale of this older style floor plan.

Accent pieces that mirrored timelessness were carefully curated to help unify the spaces between modern and old. The simplicity of muting the colors helped highlight its historical significance and helps bring warmth back into focus. The result is a cohesive, timeless home that respects its past while feeling grounded in the present.

The goal for this renovation was to preserve the historical integrity of the original 1920s structure while thoughtfully introducing a more cohesive and livable layout. Rather than removing walls entirely, outdated architectural features like pony walls were carefully modified or slightly opened to improve visual flow and natural light, all while maintaining the charm of distinct, traditional rooms.

A muted color palette helped create visual continuity and a sense of calm throughout the space. Rich green accents and rustic elements were layered to complement the home’s original acorn-stained floors. With strategic space planning, the result is a home that honors its history while feeling open, warm, and quietly modern.

Vibrant, expressive artwork was layered throughout the space to contrast the muted color palette and bring moments of energy into each room. Lighting was approached with the same intention, selected not only for function but also for form. Sculptural, retro-inspired fixtures were curated as bold visual statements, with a distinctive pendant suspended at the heart of the room, acting as both anchor and art.
